Leadership Learning Series

The Department of Teaching and Learning envisioned and actualized a series of support structures that brought together leaders of departments across the district to take steps toward full implementation of PCBL. Through whole group and small group experiences facilitated by ALP consultants, the leaders "put pieces together" as they grappled with challenges and united around common practices to amplify their collective impact.

Leadership Consulting

Leading large scale change can be challenging work. Throughout the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years, a Dell Education Strategist and ALP consultant collaborated with Davis leadership to find the reward in their efforts. A regular meeting cadence allowed the team to design a year-long integrated professional learning plan, facilitate opportunities for cross-functional teams, and leverage data to reflect on progress toward defined department goals.

Learner-Centered Experience Design

As Davis prepares for its launch of the 2020-21 academic year, educators will require a wide range of real-time support to assist students with the greatest needs. ALP consultants possess the experience to design learning pathways that invite educators to explore personalized learning approaches to meet individual student remediation needs. Each pathway will include scenarios for exploration, curated resources, practical approaches to identifying and filling gaps, and task cards to support implementation. As a means to build capacity and ensure fidelity of implementation, ALP consultants also provide a 1-hour calibration session for 25-30 coaches, teacher leaders and/or specialists who will use the presentation materials to facilitate future pathway sessions.

Facilitated Learning Experiences

As Davis School District leadership worked to accurately and practically frame its vision for personalized learning, the team invited ALP and Dell Technologies to coach classroom educators and school administrators in its purposeful application. Through a combination of virtual and blended coaching rounds, a team of ALP consultants worked with multiple cohorts of educators and principals to co-teach using personalized curriculum and aligned pedagogies. The critical design principle in these facilitated learning experiences was that all PL ‘had to walk the walk’. If the goal was to assist children in realizing personalized pathways, then the adults had to participate in a model that generated empathy, comfort and facilitative skill.

Strategic Planning

In preparation for the District’s Cognia (formerly AdvancED) accreditation, Davis invited a senior ALP consultant to support its leadership in accurately demonstrating the state of its personalized learning model. Over the course of a number of video planning and asynchronous development sessions, this goal was realized. In October, Davis School District successfully maintained its accreditation and secured valuable feedback on how to continuously improve in its efforts to personalize learning experiences for students and educators.

Learning Model Development

A critical recommendation from the ALP / Dell Technologies needs assessment report called on Davis School District leadership to clarify its common language around its personalized learning vision. In partnership with District educators, site administrators and students, a team of ALP consultants facilitated a process that generated clear, concise definitions for critical terms as well as a learner profile. These documents were co-authored by members of the Davis community as a means of building local leadership capacity. The co-creation of this personalized learning framework brought greater clarity to the District vision and helped all stakeholders to ‘see’ themselves in this progressive and highly equitable learning model.

Needs Assessment and Asset Inventory

In the summer of 2018, the Davis School District leadership team mobilized around an initial vision for personalized learning. A senior ALP consultant was invited to facilitate a needs assessment process to gauge the District’s current state of readiness relative to this vision. The consultant conducted a review of the current DSD organizational chart, visited over two dozen randomly sample classrooms as well as analyzed curriculum, assessment and professional learning frameworks. A detailed report was developed, which included specific findings and recommendations that Davis leadership used to frame its multi-year implementation plan.
